Stephen L. James, MA, MEng, MBA, CPA, CMA
Stephen is an independent strategic management consultant and a senior member of the executive education team at the Asper School of Business. Steve draws upon three decades of rich and progressively senior management and business educator experience—experience that rests on a rich academic foundation, and one that crosses the private, public, defence and not-for-profit worlds.
Steve started his professional career as an Air Force officer and pilot. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1973, earning his BSc (Physics) and BA (History), and his pilot wings over the next ten years. In 1987, as a Major, he left operational flying for PG training, and spent the following two years earning his MA exploring government-defence relations and inter-agency dynamics. On graduation he assumed a strategic planning position in National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa and spent the following six years participating in a series of national-level policy and restructuring initiatives. In 1995, on developing the Air Force’s first comprehensive business plan, he received the Air Force’s Commendation for his contributions in the areas of strategic planning and defence forecasting.
In 1995, Steve left the military to once again further his education, receiving in 1996 an MBA, as well as a Certificate in Public Sector Management, from the University of Manitoba. In the immediate years following, he undertook, as an independent consultant, a variety of public, private and not-for-profit strategic planning and change management assignments. In 2001, having always enjoyed academia, Mr. James assumed a full-time position at the University of Manitoba’s I.H. Asper School of Business where he directed the School’s MBA program for the next ten years. In 2011, looking for a new challenge, he moved to the University’s Faculty of Graduate Studies where he assumed lead of a special project to establish aerospace graduate programming on campus. In 2015, having set-up three graduate aerospace programs as well as completing his MEng in systems engineering , he left Graduate Studies and the University to return to private consulting. That said, he still teaches on a part-time basis for the Asper School of Business and the Department of Political Studies in the areas of business strategy, executive management, and public administration. Beyond his academic credentials, he is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CMA legacy).
